Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Amsterdam
Welcome to Amsterdam, a fascinating 700 year old city lined with picturesque canals and filled with world-class museums, theatres and cafés. On arrival, you’ll be met by an Emerald Waterways representative at the airport or in Amsterdam if you’re travelling on the Eurostar, and transferred to your deluxe river cruise ship where a warm welcome awaits from your Captain and crew.
On-board one of Europe’s newest river cruise ships, you’ll get to experience all its fantastic features, like the heated swimming pool and cinema. Tonight you’re invited to join your fellow travellers for a fabulous Welcome Dinner. Your Cruise Director will also hold a port talk to tell you all about the exciting activities you have to look forward to in the days ahead as you sail along the Rhine River.
Included meals: Welcome Dinner.

Day 2 Amsterdam
After breakfast you’ll take an included guided walking tour along the cobbled streets of Amsterdam to discover its many quaint coffee shops, charming churches and cheese shops – not forgetting its intricate maze of picturesque canals.
Afterwards, you’ll have free time to explore the city at your own pace. Home to over 50 world-class museums – including the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh and Stedelijk museums – you could always use your free time to educate yourself on Amsterdam’s colourful history and culture.
Or if you’d prefer to relax after your walking tour, you can always grab a drink in one of the many quirky cafes. Back on-board your ship, you’ll  enjoy lunch as you set sail through the Dutch countryside, passing its famous windmills as you gently cruise towards the Rhine River.
As tonight is your first night sailing, you will enjoy a fantastic Gala Dinner to celebrate.
Included excursions: a guided walking tour of Amsterdam.
Included excursions: a guided walking tour of Amsterdam.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 3 Cologne
Today you’ll cruise along the Rhine River to Cologne. Founded by the Romans, the city is one of Germany’s largest, oldest and yet most modern cities, largely due to a rebuilding plan post WWII.
After lunch on-board your ship, you’ll join your local guide for an included tour of the Old Town, with its beautiful squares, historic monuments, countless characteristic memorials and wells, and of course its magnificent World Heritage-listed Gothic Cathedral, Kölner Dom. Once you’ve learnt all about the city, you’ll be left to your own devices to explore the many shops, museums and galleries – including an interesting Roman artefact museum. Or if you’re feeling energetic, why not climb to the top of the Kölner Dom to enjoy spectacular views of the city?
Included excursions: a guided city tour of Cologne.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 4 Koblenz – Rhine Gorge
Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, today you arrive at the 2,000 year old town of Koblenz. Looking out from the ship, you’ll spot your next point of call, the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, on the opposite side of the river. Part of the Prussian defences against the French in the 19th century, it was later used as a headquarters for the American military during WWII.
After exploring the historic fortress you’ll enjoy free time to wander through the town and take in the views. In the afternoon, you’re in for a picturesque treat as you sail through the spectacular Rhine Gorge. Featuring heavily in German folklore, it is said that the hero Seigfried is meant to have slain a dragon at the famous Drachenfels Castle, which is why the Counts of Drachenfels have a dragon in their coat of arms. As you cruise, you’ll enjoy photo opportunities at every bend, passing countless castles and vineyards as well as the famous Lorelei Rock, which legend says, was haunted by a lovelorn maiden whose singing lured sailors onto the treacherous rocks. You’ll also see Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, which was built on an island in the middle of the river as a medieval toll station.
Included excursions: a guided tour of Koblenz.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 5 Rüdesheim
This morning you’ll visit the wine making town of Rüdesheim, located at the southern entrance to the Lorelei Valley. Once you’ve enjoyed a stroll through the village, you’ll ride a cable car up to the lookout for impressive views of the surrounding valley and the confluence of the Main River.
Afterwards you’ll board the Winzerexpress mini-train to Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Instrument Museum where you’ll enjoy a guided tour of one of the world’s biggest collections of self-playing musical instruments. Following a fun-filled morning, you can spend the rest of the day at your leisure – whether that’s browsing the local shops, or relaxing on-board taking in your beautiful surroundings on the Sun Deck, in the spacious lounge, or in the heated swimming pool. Alternatively you can use your free time to book an optional wine tasting excursion.
Included excursions: a guided tour of Rüdesheim and Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Instrument Museum.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 6 Mannheim
As you sail today, you’ll continue upstream to the town of Mannheim which is located at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers. The city was a pivotal place during the invasion of Germany by the Allies in WWII, and has long been associated with inventions in industry – such as the world’s first compact diesel-powered car built by Karl Benz in 1923, and the first rocket plane built by Julius Hatry in 1929. Following your guided tour, you’ll enjoy free time to explore the town further before later sailing to Speyer, one of Germany’s oldest towns. You can swap your free time today for an optional excursion to the medieval town of Heidelberg, which includes a visit to its impressive castle.
Included excursions: a guided tour of Mannheim.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7 Black Forest
The beautiful Black Forest region of Germany has long been a fairy-tale destination – and you get to spend a full day in this magical place. Your day begins with a visit to Vogtsbauernhof Museum, which is an open air exhibition of 16th century life, featuring a number of reconstructed Black Forest farms. Black smoke rooms, furnished farmhouse parlours, bed chambers with painted furniture, shield clocks and tiled stoves can be seen in the houses – as well as the impressive roof structures of the large farmsteads. Your guided tour will give you a fascinating insight into the culture of the Black Forest – and you might even get to see some of the traditional craft demonstrations.
This afternoon you’re invited to experience a typical Gasthof owned by a local family, where you’ll enjoy lunch and a cooking demonstration. After learning how to make the perfect Black Forest Gateau, you’ll have the chance to taste the delicious desert the region’s famous for.
You’ll also have the opportunity to visit Germany’s largest Cuckoo Clock which is a remarkable 12 feet wide, 10 feet high and 3 feet deep. Afterwards you’ll get to experience the power of Germany’s largest waterfall. With a decent of more than 534 feet, Triberg Falls is a landmark in the Black Forest region, with the deep valley at the bottom of the falls forming a basin just wide enough for a small town. Back on-board your ship this evening you’ll join your Captain and fellow guests for a fabulous Farewell Dinner.
EmeraldPLUS: lunch and cooking demonstration at a family-run Gasthof.
Included excursions: a guided tour of the Black Forest and Vogtsbauerhof Museum.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and Farewell Dinner.

Day 8 Basel – UK
After breakfast with Basel’s riverbanks as your backdrop, you’ll say your goodbyes and disembark your ship to be transferred to Basel airport for your flight home. Your flight with British Airways to London Heathrow is included in your holiday. Please call for details on return flights which are available to selected regional UK airports at no extra cost. Alternatively, you can travel back to the UK on the Eurostar via Paris for an additional £95 per person.
