Introduction

Your journey of discovery begins in the beautiful city of Prague – the historical pearl of Europe. A truly deserving UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, the city’s centre brings to life its rich history with a wealth of monuments, amazing architecture, musical masterpieces and nostalgic atmosphere. From Prague to Budapest, and at every stop between, you’re taken back in time to
‘Old Europe’, uncovering ancient Abbeys, beautiful palaces, and historic landmarks left in the wake of WWII. For a truly authentic insight into Slovakian life, you’re welcomed into the home of a local family for afternoon tea, while the iconic sights and bustling city streets of Vienna and Budapest perfectly showcase Europe’s vibrant modern culture.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Prague
Welcome to Prague! On arrival, you’ll be met at Prague International Airport and transferred to the Design Hotel Elephant or the K+K Hotel in central Prague for a three night stay in one of Europe’s most magical cities. This evening you’ll meet your Tour Director and other guests for a welcome drink.

Day 2 Prague
Prague was built on nine hills along the Vltava River which flows through the city, reflecting its beautiful architecture – including towers, church spires and cupolas, palaces and town houses – in its water. This morning you’ll explore the sights of the Old Town Square on an included guided tour, taking you to see Mozart’s Theatre, Little Square and the Astronomical Clock. The tour then continues across the Charles Bridge over the River Vltava where you’ll board a coach taking you to the 1,000-year-old Prague Castle area. Here, a local guide will take you through Hradcany Square and past the magnificent Loreta Monastery before moving on to Hradcany Castle, the Old Kings Palace and St. George’s Monastery. This evening you’ll enjoy a night of dancing and entertainment at a local Czech tavern.
EmeraldPLUS: evening entertainment at a local Czech tavern.
Included excursions: a walking tour of Prague.
Included meals: breakfast and highlight dinner

Day 3 Prague
Today you’re free to explore the historical capital of Bohemia as you please. But to make sure you don’t miss out on the city’s best bits, your Tour Director is on hand to help plan your day.
Included meals: breakfast.

Day 4 Prague – Nuremberg
After breakfast, you’ll take a coach to Nuremberg where you’ll board your deluxe ship – your home on the river for the next eight days. Once you’ve unpacked, you’re free to relax with a cup of tea or coffee in your stylishly appointed cabin, and take a look around the ship and try out all its fantastic facilities, such as its heated swimming pool. This evening, you have a special invitation to an elegant Welcome Dinner to introduce you to other guests, the crew, the captain and life on the river.
Included meals: breakfast and Welcome Dinner.

Day 5 Kelheim – Regensburg
This morning’s sailing takes you through the final stretch of the fascinating Main-Danube Canal to Kelheim. As you cruise along the Danube River you’ll reach Regensburg, one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities. On your guided walking tour you’ll have the chance to admire one of the oldest bridges crossing the Danube as well as the city’s architectural highlights. Southwest of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg lies the old merchants’ quarter, where you’ll get to see a number of old tower-houses and the picturesque Old Town Hall that dates from the 14th century with historical apartments, a medieval courtroom, and collections of art and antiquities. To replace your guided tour of Regensburg, you can book an optional boat cruise along the Danube Gorge and a tour of Weltenburg Abbey. Founded by monks in 602 AD, Weltenburg Abbey is the oldest monastery in Bavaria and boasts a courtyard surrounded by Baroque buildings. This evening’s on-board entertainment is a traditional Bavarian Oompah Band, playing a selection of fantastic folk music into the night while you relax with a drink.
EmeraldPLUS: evening entertainment with a traditional Bavarian Oompah Band.
Included excursions: a guided tour of Regensburg.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 6 Passau
Situated at the confluence of the rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz, today you’re visiting Passau – the “Three Rivers City”. On this morning’s walking tour, you’ll stroll through the cobblestone streets and narrow alleys before emerging to find the perfect view of the hilltop Oberhaus Fortress. Originally designed to serve the Bishop of Passau in 1219, it’s today home to a fascinating museum, restaurant and open-air theatre.
You’ll then have the chance to appreciate the wonderfully ornate architecture of St. Stephen’s Cathedral which towers majestically above Passau and is the mother church of the eastern Danube region and St. Stephen’s Church in Vienna – and home to the world’s largest cathedral organ, with over 17,000 pipes. As an alternative you may book an optional full day tour (including lunch) to Salzburg in Austria – one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps and a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with dreaming spires, green hills and many romantic gardens. Or you may prefer to visit Ceský Krumlov – a small town in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Built around a 13th century castle with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, it’s an outstanding example of a small central European medieval town whose architectural heritage has remained intact over more than five centuries.
Included excursions: a walking tour of Passau.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 7 Melk – Vienna
Your tour of Austria’s wine-growing region begins in Melk – a pretty town situated on the south bank of the Danube River. Here you’ll explore a 900-year old Benedictine Abbey which is located above the town on a splendid rocky outcrop overlooking where the Danube joins the Wachau Valley – an Austrian valley with a picturesque landscape. Boasting the finest Italian architecture, elaborate gold leaf walls, a 640ft Imperial Corridor and fabulous fresco ceilings, Melk Abbey is a beautiful sight to behold.
Later, you’ll sail through the great Wachau Valley – home to the 12th century castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned after returning from the crusades – and on to Vienna.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 8 Vienna
Austria’s vibrant city of Vienna is a fantastic fusion of old and new. As well as being known as ‘The City of Music’ because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also regarded as ‘The City of Dreams’ as it was home to Sigmund Freud – the world’s first psychoanalyst. Today, we take you on an icon-filled coach tour along the Ringstrasse where you’ll see Vienna’s world-famous Opera House, Burgtheatre, Town Hall and Hofburg Imperial Palace, before hopping off to explore on foot. This afternoon you’re free to explore the city, which is home to over 27 castles and a record-breaking 150 palaces. For a view of Vienna that simply can’t be beaten, why not take a ride on the Riesenrad – the main square’s giant Ferris Wheel? From its dizzy heights, you’ll be able to take in the city’s fabulous sights from a truly unique vantage point. Alternatively, you can swap your free time this afternoon for an optional visit to Schönbrunn Palace – Empress Sisi’s former summer residence, complete with an enchanting park, zoo and labyrinth. And in the evening, you can book an optional trip to watch a Viennese concert.
Included excursions: a sightseeing drive along the Ringstrasse and a walking tour of Vienna.
Included meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 9 Bratislava
Today you’ll experience the bustling pedestrian plazas and stylish street cafés of Bratislava. And for a more profound insight, you’ll be taken on a sightseeing tour of the Old Town – home to a plethora of historical buildings. Must-see sights include the sobering Holocaust Memorial, the Museum of Jewish Culture and Slavin War Memorial, the magnificent Mirbach Palace and the Gothic cathedral of St Martin. Here, you’ll also find Bratislava’s Town Hall – a complex of three buildings erected in the 14th and 15th centuries; Michael’s Gate – one of the oldest of the town’s structures; and nearby resides the narrowest house in Europe. Afterwards, you’ll enjoy a special home-hosted afternoon tea with a local Slovakian family, providing you with a truly authentic insight into Slovakian culture. Once you’ve been welcomed into their home, you’ll sample traditional fare in the company of new friends, and discover what everyday life is like in Slovakia’s largest city. This evening, you have an extra special invite to the Captain’s Gala Dinner.

Widely known as one of the continent’s most beautiful cities, Budapest is home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes’ Square and the Millennium Underground Railway – the second oldest railway in the world.
Today, your private guided tour takes you past the Royal Palace of Buda – home to the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest History Museum, the National Library, Lion Courtyard, Matthias Well, and the statue of the Turul Bird; the mythological bird of the Magyars. The tour then continues to Fisherman’s Bastion situated on Castle Hill, where you’re free to admire the most breath-taking panoramic views of the city, before moving on to see Matthias Church and the iconic Chain Bridge that links Buda and Pest.
