State-of-the-art River Cruising!

If you thought a river cruise was just a simple cruise down a river, think again!

River cruise tours have become big business, and because of this growing popularity, river cruise ships are evolving and getting better all the time.

viking_douro_mountains_tcm56-26291

Take for instance the  the magnificent Viking longships. Not so much a small ship that travels along the rivers, more an amazing hotel on water sailing through some of the most breathtaking scenery anyone could want to wish!

Aquavit Terrace

Veranda Suite

Furthermore, it’s not just the luxurious state rooms river cruise liners have to offer, although they are something else as well. The big extras make all the difference too!

Take for example the Emerald Waterways ships and all their finery.

These ships are Emerald Waterways new state-of-the-art ships and are really something else!

The new deluxe ships boast a heated swimming pool complete with retractable roof and bar, creating a brilliant on board oasis to relax in, whatever the weather. Once you’ve had a dip in the pool’s sparkling waters, you can always grab a drink from the bar to enjoy as you unwind on the comfortable lounge chairs.

Swimming Pool and Bar | Emerald Waterways

On selected evenings, the pool area inventively transforms into a cinema showing a collection of classic films and recent releases – taking on board entertainment in a completely new direction -wow!

Evening Cinema | Emerald Waterways

And if that’s not enough, the fact that dining is made a truly amazing experience just makes river cruising even better.

Enjoy delightful cuisine in their Reflections main restaurants,  grab a café-style lunch from a choice of pastas, pizzas, soups, sandwiches and fish and chips and enjoy alfresco dining with views of the spectacular scenery on the Terrace.

They even have complimentary tea and coffee available at all times throughout the cruise and red and white wines, local beers and soft drinks for you to enjoy with your lunch and dinner – all of which are included in the price of your holiday.

Whats’s more, to complement the high quality dining on board ships, authentic dining experiences  are often provided off the ship to give you a deeper insight into your destination’s culture – truly amazing!

New World Record for River Cruising!

viking-logo

Viking River Cruises can certainly put on a show!

viking_sun_cologne

Viking River Cruises recently announced it has set yet another Guinness world record with the launch of its newest Viking Longship!

Viking  was awarded the Guinness World Record for “The Most Ships Inaugurated in One Day by One Company”

In a very impressive multi-phased event taking place over a duration of 24 hours, Viking christened 16 of its award-winning Viking Longships, which

beat last years record of 10 new Viking Longships christened in one day.

During these unique ceremonies, 9 Viking Longships were christened in Amsterdam, 4 in Rostock, Germany and 3 in Avignon, France – WOW!

The highly efficient,  glamorous and first-of-its kind ceremony included ceremonial godmothers for each ship who went on to christen the ships in

typically elaborate fashion, swinging the usual champagne bottle across the waiting vessels.

The festivities didn’t stop there as Viking also went on to christen  2 new, unique river vessels in Porto, Portugal, bringing the grand total to 18 new

ships launched across four countries in five days -beat that!

Due to the popularity of Viking’s ‘Portugal’s River of Gold’ river cruise, the two new ships there will double the company’s current capacity on the

Douro River, no doubt making a lot of people happy!

SHIP_Hemming-Ext_OVR_478x345_tcm23-21680

Discovering the Douro on this ‘Portugal’s River of Gold’ itinerary is amazing.

This fabulous river cruise features two days and nights in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and a cruise along the Douro River.

You get to see some of Europe’s most pristine vistas, historic monasteries, terraced vineyards and baroque mansions – wonderful!

It also includes a day trip to Salamanca, Spain, one of this itinerary’s four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and several visits to

wineries to see the process and sample the port and tawny wines – sounds like heaven!

This river cruise alone is testament to the amazing river cruises that Viking have got to offer, no wonder Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises proudly announces “Today we mark a new milestone for Viking and for modern river cruising. We are proud to celebrate the arrival of our newest ships, and it is an honor to have each one named by a prominent godmother. River cruising is the fastest-growing segment of travel, and it is in large part because of the enthusiasm of our guests and travel trade partners that we have enjoyed such success.”

Behold the River of Gold!

You can’t get much better than the magnificent Douro River!

 SHIP_Hemming-Ext_OVR_478x345_tcm23-21680

It is the third longest river in the Iberian Peninsula and flows from north-central Spain through Portugal to its outlet at Porto on the Atlantic Ocean. The name Douro itself originates from the ancient Celtic tribal word for water.

The river was even personified as a god ‘Durius’ during the Roman period and now has an UNESCO  World Heritage Site classification in some parts of the Douro Valley in Portugal. For example, the Tower of Belém in Lisbon is a wonderful sight to see.

The river is wild but beautiful and certainly unspoiled, magnificently picturesque and dotted by terraced hills, small towns, wine-producing farms, and small fishing boats.

Traditional rabelo sailing boats also line the river with their casks of port wine made in century-old wineries such as the Quinta da Avessada in Pinhão.

Although the Douro is narrow in parts and in the past water levels quite inconsistent, but there are now five dams on the Portuguese section of the river  helping to stabilize water levels and  produce electricity. Subsequently, this has allowed the scheduling of river cruise sailing tours along the Douro River Valley. In fact, Viking River Cruises in particular have just launched two brand new ships for the Douro called the Viking Hemming and Viking Torgil. To say they look amazing is an understatement, built exclusively to sail Portugal’s Douro River and offering state-of-the-art engineering, deluxe accommodations and Viking’s signature Scandinavian décor – wow!

Freya_RhineCruising1

A Viking longship.

Furthermore, Viking are now offering a whopping £1000 discount per person on 2015 river cruise tours, which certainly is outstanding value!

The Douro is often called the River of Gold, and believe me, a river cruise down this magnificent river would certainly be worth its weight in gold!

Romantic second honeymoon on a Viking Longship!

I remember our first wedding with a mixture of fondness and slight embarrassment as it was celebrated in 1989, the end of a rather dubious decade in regards to fashion at least. My dress was a wonderful mixture of blue polka dots on a green back ground courtesy of Laura Ashley at the time and I thought I was in the height of fashion ( but maybe not for a wedding ha ha).

Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is that I’ve decided that I want a second wedding or a ‘Blessing’ with my husband next year to celebrate 25 years of marriage ( gulp). I will also get a chance to wear something a little more stylish I hope.

Of course, there should also be a second honeymoon, and hopefully something a bit more exotic than Scarborough where we had our first but got burnt to a crisp ( but that’s another story).

I was thinking more in the lines of a cruise or river cruise which would be more relaxing and romantic, while also giving us the chance to experience other cultures. My husband’s  parents swear by them and his grandmother went on a lot of cruises in the 1960′s and couldn’t get enough of them apparently – bless her.

River cruising in the 1960′s !

Love the 1960′s fashion though !

After much searching I’ve managed to find a very good website called River Cruise Tours which caters just for what I’m looking for and is very user friendly. I’ve decided on a wonderfully named tour called the ‘VIKING Romantic Danube’ which ticks all the boxes for a very exciting second honeymoon !!

Map of the tour.

The tour starts in Budapest, travels through Austria and Germany, before ending in Nuremberg. It will also be of great interest to my husband as he has family originating from all these areas but has never visited there.

The magnificent river cruise ship we sail on is called the Viking Idun and its features are outstanding. Not only does this Viking Long-ship offer state-of-the-art engineering, design and luxury, it also has eight different types of accommodation to choose from (2 Explorer Suites, 7 Veranda Suites, 39 Veranda Staterooms, 22 French Balcony Staterooms, 25 Standard Staterooms). It also has an observation lounge and bar with floor-to-ceiling glass doors, a restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows for panoramic views, library corner and on board boutique – the list goes on.

Veranda Stateroom (A)

I’m for one booking our places now with rivercruisetours.co.uk as I’ve heard they are snapped up very, very quickly. With that done, I can be rest assured we have the most amazing (second) honeymoon to look forward to – only the ‘Blessing’ to sort out now…….!!
